Race Book Lingo: “Across”

If you walk up to a race book window and bet five dollars “across” on a horse, you are making a $15 bet. The bet you’re making is $5 for the horse to Win, $5 for the horse to Place (come in top two), and $5 for the horse to Show (come in top three). The term “across” is short for “across the board.” The board being the three bets—Win, Place, Show.
